Prof. Sargur N. Srihari Graduate Fellowship

The Prof. Sargur N. Srihari Graduate Fellowship in Computer Science and Engineering was established in March 2023 with gifts from Hari’s family, friends, and colleagues. This fellowship will be awarded regularly to an incoming Ph.D student at the University at Buffalo with an interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Both US and Canadian residents making gifts to the Prof. Sargur N. Srihari Graduate Fellowship endowment fund may be eligible for tax benefits. UB is a registered charity in both countries and will issue a Canadian gift receipt for any donors listing a Canadian address.

University at Buffalo Commemoration and Honors

Conference Room Naming. On March 10, 2023, UB held a ceremony announcing the naming of the Sargur N. Srihari Conference Room (Room 113Y) in Davis Hall. Video of the ceremony is available here.

UB President’s Medal. On May 20, 2022, UB President Satish Tripathi awarded Hari the UB President’s Medal during the Engineering Graduate Students Commencement ceremony. Video of the ceremony is available here (jump to 40:20), including speeches by President Tripathi and Rohini Srihari.

Symposium. On May 6, 2022, the UB Computer Science Department held a symposium in Hari’s honor that celebrated his professional accomplishments. Video of the symposium is available online. The event was followed by a dinner for symposium attendees and members of the Western New York community.

Commemorations in Bangalore

Prof. Sargur N. Srihari Medal. In 2021, Prof. Srihari instituted a Gold Medal in his name at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, his alma mater. Beginning in 2022, this Gold Medal will be awarded annually to the best graduate of the M. Tech program in Artificial Intelligence.

IISc Commemoration. On June 3, 2022, the Indian Institute of Science held an event in Prof. Srihari’s honor. In addition to being an IISc alumnus himself, Prof. Srihari frequently lectured at IISc and held an appointment as a visiting professor during 2020.

Memorial Concert. On November 27, 2022, the Mysore Educational Society (MES) Kalavedi held a music concert in Malleswaram by the renowned Carnatic musicians Ranjani and Gayatri. This concert was arranged and sponsored by the Srihari family in his honor.

Events in Washington, D.C.

A Memorial and Celebration of Life event was held on Sunday March 20, 2022 at the City Tavern Club in Georgetown. Earlier that day, traditional Hindu 13th day rites and chanting were also conducted at the same venue. In Hindu tradition, 13th day rites are conducted to honor one’s ancestors and allow the soul to depart.

Visitation and Hindu funeral rites were previously held on Saturday March 12, 2022 at the Pumphrey Funeral Home in Bethesda.
